Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 86 Verso:
?Derwentwater 1831

Turner Bequest CCLXVI 86a
Pencil and watercolour with scratching out on white wove paper, 114 x 187 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This pencil sketch with scratching out is hard to identify as it is clearly out of sequence with the other sketches nearby, Turner having turned towards the back of the sketchbook in order to use this grey-washed page which he prepared before setting off on tour. However, the combination of a mountain and lake suggests that it may be a Lake District scene, and the mountain in the background (seen across the lake through a clearing in the trees) resembles Skiddaw, suggesting that this may be Derwentwater as seen from a point near Lodore (see folio 18 verso; D25796).
