This second view of Goldielands Tower was made from the south bank of the River Teviot on a bend in its course between Martin’s Bridge and Langland’s Bridge. The sketchbook is inverted and the tower is represented as a simple box shape at the right of the picture. At the bottom left is a corner of a stonework structure and the inscription ‘Spring or well nr Hawick’. Unlike his sketch of Goldielands on folio 87 verso (D25918), Turner utilised the pre-prepared grey wash on this page for enhanced tonal effects, scratching away the paint in the foreground to create highlights and show the movement of the water and to highlight the tower. There are three further sketches of Goldielands Tower on folio 89 (D25921).
