This is one of four sketches of Lincluden Collegiate Church made on grey-washed paper at the back of the sketchbook (see folio 89 verso; D25922). The sketch, made with the book inverted, shows the view across the Cluden Water. Turner has scratched away the wash revealing the white paper beneath to highlight one side of the tower and part of the river bank. He also scratched away to create the effect of ripples and splashes in the water, and rubbed away at the sky to give the effect of light wisps of cirrus clouds.
There are similar views to this on folio 91 verso and 92 verso (D25926, D25928), but this is the most detailed of the three.
