With the sketchbook turned to the left are two sketches of Hailes Castle from the east, made from across the River Tyne. The path on the opposite river bank at the left of the top sketch is also shown on folio 43 verso (D25999; CCLXVII 43a); this is the path that connects Hailes Mill on the north bank of the Tyne with the road called Brae heads Loan, which runs parallel with the river along the south bank towards East Linton.
Hailes Mill is depicted at the right of the second sketch, with the castle at the left where it is partially obscured by trees and the river bank.
