With the sketchbook inverted this view of Newark Castle from the south-east was probably made as Turner approached the castle on foot from the Bowhill entrance, accompanied by Robert Cadell. Dropping down to the edge of the Yarrow Water, Turner sketched the view from the riverbank with the castle seen between trees on either side.
