For Turner’s visit to Tabley in 1808, see Introduction to the sketchbook, and for a series of sketches probably of the estate and the lake or Moat, note to folio 12 (D06994; Turner Bequest CV 10). Finberg’s title seems right as far as it goes; it is to be hoped that the traps are not the life-threatening man-traps that Sir John Leicester, as he announced on a poster for distribution around the area and preserved in Tabley House, set in the grounds to deter poachers. Alternatively, the men may be taking up nets from the Moat, as probably seen in folio 18 (D07000; Turner Bequest CV 15).
