This slight outline, with a classical column and its base beside a rusticated arch, is probably part of the either the east or west gateway in the Doric screen of Carlton House, London, as seen in a large watercolour diagram made for Turner’s first perspective lecture at the Royal Academy in January 1811 (see the Introduction to the sketchbook), showing the whole of the north front with rusticated wings and the colonnaded screen and gateways in front (Tate D17119; Turner Bequest CXCV 148).
The rough sketch on folio 50 recto (D08024) also shows the east gateway in its setting. There are further studies of Carlton House on folios 15 verso, 16 recto, 49 verso and 61 verso (D07983, D07984, D08023, D08039). For the history of the building, see under folio 15 verso (D07983).
