The large mounds of rock are the most impressive feature of this sketch of the shore at the east end of Loch Katrine, and Turner has carefully indicated their shape and character with short lines and hatching only, rather than tracing their outlines as he did for the profile of the hills beyond. This is the ‘landing’ place that Turner marked on his sketch on folio 26 (D26486), and here a boat is drawn up on the beach. The present view looks north, so the mountain in the distance is Ben A’an. Turner made a view looking in the opposite direction on folio 28 (D26490).
For more information about Turner’s visit to Loch Katrine and references to further sketches of it, see folio 47 (D26528).
