From the point where Eas Brae becomes Main Street, this view looks north-east along Tobermory Bay to the harbour at its north end. Turner’s sketch takes in the hill to the west of the town from where he made several of his sketches of Tobermory (see folio 1 verso; D26749), and at the bottom of the slope of Eas Brae is the arch of the bridge under which the Tobermory River flows out into the Sound of Mull. Calligraphic marks at the right of the picture probably represent people walking towards the bay, and the masts of several boats can be seen alongside the harbour pier. A sketch on folio 47 (D26831) brings us closer to the pier.
For more information about Turner’s time in Tobermory and references to further sketches see folio 1 verso (D26749).
