This sketch is one of eleven that Turner made from the promontory at the south-east of Gylen Castle on the island of Kerrera: folios 68–73 (D26874–D26884). It was rather hastily executed, though Turner has used his scratchy pencil-work to suggest the craggy character of the landscape. Having already made careful architectural studies of the castle (folio 73 verso; D26885), it was not necessary for Turner to draw the ruin in detail, just to mark its position relative to its topography.
