Turner made eleven sketches of Gylen Castle from the east and south, executed as he prowled around the south of the island of Kerrera: folios 68–73 (D26874–D26884). The present sketch was made from the east just below the crag on which the castle ruins stand. Across the Firth of Lorn to the left is the island of Mull. Turner’s sketches of the castle fill twenty-five pages of the Staffa sketchbook: folios 63 verso–75 verso (D26865–D26889).
