Dunstaffnage Castle is seen here from across Dunstaffnage Bay to the south. The castle stands at the end of a promontory at the mouth of Loch Etive. Behind the castle is Ardmucknish Bay with Loch ‘Lin[nhe]’ beyond the promontory to the left, and the hills of Morvern beyond that. There are similar views of the castle on folios 92 (D26922) and 97 verso (D26935; CCLXXIII 98a).
At the bottom of the page is a sketch of hills surrounding a loch, and at the left there is an island. The loch is presumably Loch Etive and the sketch may be a continuation from the right of the sketch above. This would make the island Eilean Mòr, with the hills either side of Loch Etive.
For a full list of Turner’s sketches of Dunstaffnage see folio 89 (D26916).
While the page has been inscribed ‘98’ in red ink (presumably by John Ruskin) and stamped with the Turner Bequest number ‘CCLXXIII 98’, it is now bound in the sketchbook as folio 97.
