Janet Carolan, based on David Wallace-Hadrill’s copy of Turner’s sketch, suggested that this is a view of the ‘steep shores at Castle Urquhart’.1 Wallace-Hadrill’s sketch, however, failed to reproduce the overlapping loops at the lower centre of the sketch that are Turner’s unmistakable sign for foaming water (see folio 25; D27101 for comparison). This is therefore either the bottom of the Lower Fall, or the whole of the smaller Upper Fall at Foyers on the eastern shore of Loch Ness.
For references to further sketches of the Falls of Foyers, see folio 40 verso (D27034).
