This sheet of off-white laid writing paper may belong to a small group of loose-leaf sketches made while Turner was staying with Hugh Munro at Novar House near Evanton, Ross-Shire.1 The style of the sketch, and the subject of a stream with hills, is similar to sketches of Glen Glass, which lies a mile or so to the east of Evanton: Tate D34791 (Turner Bequest CCCLXIV d 324). Turner is likely to have explored the area with Munro, who may be depicted in a few of the sketches.
The sketch is drawn on the right-hand side of a wide sheet of paper, folded in half by the artist. The left-hand side of the sheet has been listed separately as Tate D34858 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV d 370).

Several of these sheets can be identified by the watermark as having been made at Carron Mill in Denny near Stirling. The current sheet has no watermark, but the paper appears identical and is twice the width but the same height as other sheets of Carron Mill writing paper, which have been roughly cut down.
