This sketch follows a series of views of St Mary’s Loch in Selkirkshire (folios 24–28; D26140–D26148) and begins a sequence recording Turner’s journey east along the Yarrow Valley towards Selkirk (folio 29 verso–40; D26151–D26172). This view is likely to be towards Dryhope from the head of the loch. The Yarrow Water flows under the bridge at the left of this image and winds through the landscape to the right. In a similar view on folio 31 (D26154) the buildings at the centre-right are inscribed ‘Hope’, perhaps standing for Dryhope. The sketch on the reverse of the page may show the view in the opposite direction: folio 30 verso (D26153). The separate sketch of part of a building at the top right of this page may depict Dryhope farm.
