This is the last sketch that Turner made of St Mary’s Loch in Selkirkshire. Having made a series of sketches from the north-east end of the loch (folios 24–28; D26140–D26148), the artist turned to the east and began his journey towards Selkirk. This sketch was made from near Dryhope, which is depicted on the opposite page of the sketchbook (folio 31; D26154). The building depicted in a separate sketch at the top of the page may be the farm there.
