This slight and rapid sketch probably depicts the Yarrow Water near the village of Yarrow in Selkirkshire. It is one of several sketches that Turner made on his journey between St Mary’s Loch and Selkirk: folios 29 verso–40 (D26151–D26172). At the right of the sketch, on the twisting bank of the Yarrow, is the suggestion of a building.
The sketch appears to be inscribed ‘E Hogg’, though Turner is likely to have been referring to the writer James Hogg, who is associated with the area. Turner may have sketched Hogg’s house nearby on folio 26 verso (D26145) where the inscription ‘Hogg’ appears again.
