A rather slight sketch of Newark Castle, this view was made from near the bridge across the Yarrow Water near Broadmeadows, and shows the north-east corner of the castle with the river flowing beneath it to the left. There is a similar view on folio 36 verso (D26165).
This is one in a sequence of six sketches of the castle in this sketchbook, made as Turner passed the ruin on his way from St Mary’s Loch to Selkirk: folios 36–38 verso (D26164–D26169). For more information about Turner’s route see Edinburgh sketchbook 1834 Introduction.
