This sketch, inscribed ‘glen’ like folio 50 (D26192), depicts Huntly Burn, which flows through Rhymer’s Glen on Sir Walter Scott’s Abbotsford Estate. This is one of nine sketches that Turner made of the glen on 3 October 1834 in preparation for a watercolour vignette, Rhymer’s Glen, Abbotsford, circa 1834 (National Gallery of Scotland),1 which was engraved by William Miller in 1835 to illustrate Scott’s Prose Works. While that painting relates most closely to the sketch on folio 50 verso (D26193), Turner may also have referred to this sketch for the shape of the twisting stream and the appearance of the water.
