This sketch of a two-arched bridge, which comes between views of Melrose and Galashiels in the Edinburgh Sketchbook, is likely to depict Darnick Bridge over the River Tweed to the west of Melrose. The view from the road to the north-west looks east, with the three peaks of Eildon Hill in the distance. Turner is likely to have crossed this bridge on his return to Galashiels from Melrose on 3 October 1834. There follows in the sketchbook a set of sketches of Galashiels, made as he passed through the town on his journey to Edinburgh: folios 58 verso–59 verso (D26209–D26211).
