This is one of a short series of sketches that Turner made of Edinburgh’s High Street on the Royal Mile. The view looks east down the street with the Tron Kirk at the right. On the left-hand side of the street is John Knox’s House (see folio 18 verso; D26129). There is a similar view on folio 76 (D26239) and a study of the Tron Kirk on folio 75 (D26237). Sketches of Canongate further down the Royal Mile are on folios 18 verso–19 verso (D26129–D26131).
