Turner has labelled his sketch of the island ‘Inchkeith’ at the top of this page. The island lies in the Firth of Forth near Leith and is depicted in a sketch on folio 85 (D26255), and perhaps also folio 78 verso (D26244). Turner made this sketch at the beginning of his homeward journey by sea from Edinburgh.
About one hundred and fifty miles down the coast is Whitby, which is the subject of the other two sketches on this page. Across the centre of the page is a stretch of coastline which Turner has labelled ‘Witby’, and at the bottom is a view of Whitby from the sea to the north, with the ruined abbey on a cliff above the town at the left of the sketch, with a pier to the right.
