Like folio 81 (D26247), this view of Heriot’s Hospital School and Edinburgh Castle was made from the south-east of the school grounds. Turner stood on the driveway that is seen in the foreground of the sketch; there are figures with horses at the right. As on folio 79 (D26245), Heriot’s Hospital is depicted in outline only, the artist having made a special feature of the domes on the many tower and turrets, except for the clock tower which he drew in more detail; he also made a special study of the tower on folio 78 (D26243). An inscription next to the tower refers to a small architectural detail that Turner has sketched, noting ‘one is like [the] rest’.
For references to further sketches of Heriot’s Hospital, see folio 81.
