Stirling Castle, and Castle Rock upon which it stands, are seen here from the south. This is one of many views of the castle in this sketchbook and comes closest to views on folios 49 verso–51 verso (D26352–D26356), though it apparently belongs to a group of views from the Esplanade and Ladies’ Rock on the previous pages of the sketchbook: folios 55–56 (D26363–D26365). The sketch, however, also bears a striking resemblance to a view in the Stirling and the West sketchbook which was used in both 1831 and 1834: Tate D26467 (Turner Bequest CCLXX 16a).
For a full list of Turner’s sketches of Stirling see folio 44 verso (D26342).
