Lochleven Castle is seen here from close by to the north-east, with the Glassin Tower at the left and the keep at the right. There is a comparable sketch from the south-east on the reverse of this page (folio 25 verso; D26708; CCLXXII 23) and another close-up study of the ruins on folio 26 (D26727; CCLXXII 32a). Turner visited the castle on its island on Loch Leven near Kinross during a ten-day excursion round Scotland in September 1834, making sketches that would contribute towards a watercolour which was engraved for the publication Landscape – Historical Illustrations of Scotland and the Waverley Novels. See folio 25 verso for references and further information.
