The inscription is unrelated to the drawing, but qualifies the more extensive biographical notes from Pilkington’s Dictionary of Artists on the opposite page (see entry for folio 5 verso; D07364), from which there is some ink offsetting.
The dating of this sketchbook to about 1809 (see Introduction) places it within the period when Turner rented a house overlooking the River Thames at Hammersmith,1 and perhaps this and the other pencil drawings of boats and figures in this sketchbook (folios 8 verso, 9 verso, 10 verso, 11 verso; D07369, D07371, D07373, D07375) were made there or nearby.
