Turner’s inscription is not entirely clear, but does seem to be ‘Bude’, suggesting that the view is north-west to the sea across Bude Haven. The boats at the left appear to be beached, with figures nearby. The note below presumably has to do with activities and cargoes connected with the site. There are similar notes on folio 4 recto (D08368), which may show jagged rocks at Bude or nearby. There are other views of the Bude area in the contemporary Cornwall and Devon sketchbook (Tate D41311, D41312, D41318, D41345, D41352; Turner Bequest CXXV a 35, 35a, 40, 63, 70).
