Looking south-west from Plymouth Hoe, only the silhouette of Drake’s Island is shown, with Mount Edgcumbe in more detail and the outline of the coat towards Penlee Point beyond. The same view is recorded in the later Devon Rivers, No.2 sketchbook (Tate D09669; Turner Bequest CXXXIII 2).
