With the church tower of Plympton St Maurice aligned in front of the adjacent castle mound, Turner’s view is westwards from the road he had travelled from Ivybridge (see folio 156 verso; D08655; CXXIII 153a). The tower lightly indicated on the right is that of St Mary’s Church, Plympton, to the north-west. Saltram House (see also folio 107 verso; D08567; CXXIII 104a) is visible on the summit due west in the distance, beyond which Plymouth (see under folio 3 verso; D08367) lies over the horizon. There is a closer view of the castle and church on folio 106 verso (D08565; CXXIII 103a).
