Assuming that the main view shows Rame Head, it would have been drawn first as Turner progressed west on the outward leg of his West Country tour. Looking south-east from Whitesand Bay, St Michael’s Chapel is indicated on the summit to the right, on the southern tip of the peninsula west of Plymouth Sound. The other point marked on the skyline is probably the spire of St Germanus’s Church, Rame.
The view of Grampound, occupying most of the top third of the page, is framed by horizontal and vertical lines. It shows the village the main road between St Austell and Truro, apparently looking east up the main road from the vicinity of the bridge over the River Fal, with the tower of the town hall, which now houses Grampound’s Heritage Centre, in the distance.
