Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
A Hilly West Country Landscape with Buildings 1811
D08668
Turner Bequest CXXIII 160v
Pencil on white wove writing paper, 75 x 117 mm
Part watermark ‘th | 6’
This drawing is not recorded in Finberg’s
Inventory of the Turner Bequest,
1 and its subject is currently unidentified. There appear to be buildings on the steep central mound; there is a passing resemblance to Corfe Castle in Dorset, on its mound between two hills, as seen in several studies in the contemporary
Corfe to Dartmouth sketchbook (for example Tate D08815; Turner Bequest CXXIV 8), but for the absence of that building’s prominent keep at the summit.
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
