Arthur Ebdon identifies the location as the Strand at Ringmore, upstream across the River Teign from Teignmouth, and notes that sixty-eight vessels were constructed in the Teignmouth area during the Napoleonic Wars.1 The view inland to the west can today be seen from Ringmore Road and, as Butlin and Joll note, seems to be ‘back from beyond the boat under construction’ seen from the other direction in the drawing on folios 36 verso–37 recto (D08851, D08852);2 see the catalogue entries for these as the source of a painting and a watercolour. There is another ship, apparently with a row of gun ports, on the stocks above a row of cottages in the distance.
This page was recorded by Finberg as if it were a recto (without the ‘a’ suffix by which he usually indicates a verso), but the drawing he describes is bound as the verso of the sheet and the ‘recto’ is blank (with brown spotting towards the top and a repaired tear at the middle of the right-hand edge).
