Turner’s viewpoint is the coast between Cawsand and Penlee Point, looking south-east to the Mew Stone in the distance on the right and the hills leading north to Mount Batten on the far side of Plymouth Sound. The view to the south-east on folio 10 recto (D08874; CXXV 9) was made from the same spot or nearby. On his 1813 visit to Devon, Turner sailed past the Mew Stone and made several drawings of it in the Plymouth, Hamoaze sketchbook (between Tate D09448 and D09462; Turner Bequest CXXXI 172a, 179a).
