Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 31 Verso:
St Michael’s Mount, Marazion and Mount’s Bay 1811
D40816
Pencil on white wove paper, 166 x 208 mm

Stamped in black ‘CXXV – 17’ top left, upside down (‘17’ crossed out in pencil)

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This leaf is stamped ‘CXXV - 30’ on its recto (D08909; CXXV 30) with an unusual short dash, apparently having been first stamped ‘CXXV – 17’ with a long dash (matching most other stamps in the sketchbook) on the present page. Finberg’s 1909 entry for ‘[Page] 30’1 implies that the leaf was in its current position at that time, and it is unclear when it and CXXV 17/17a (D08886, D08887), originally stamped ‘CXXV – 30’, were exchanged.
The arrangement (in this much-dismembered and reassembled sketchbook) is correct to the extent that the slight drawing here, not recorded by Finberg, is a continuation of the main view of St Michael’s Mount and Mount’s Bay on folio 32 recto opposite (D08910; CXXV 31); see the entry for the latter for other views of the site.
