Turner devoted several sketchbook pages to studies of the Villa d’Este, a sixteenth-century villa and formal Renaissance garden in Tivoli built for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este (1509–1572), the son of Lucrezia Borgia. This drawing, continued on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 38 verso (D14997), depicts part of a panoramic 180-degree view from the Gran Loggia of the villa looking east across the gardens towards the bell-tower of the Duomo and the façade of the casino.
For a full discussion of Turner’s sketches of the Villa d’Este see folio 5 verso (D14942).
