This sketch depicts ruined sections of aqueducts in the hills surrounding Tivoli. Turner’s viewpoint appears to be from Colle Ripoli to the south of the town, looking east in the direction of the Via Empolitana towards Castle Madama and the aqueducts of Ponte degli Arci, see folio 85–85 verso (D15087–D15088; Turner Bequest CLXXIX 84–84a). A related view can be seen on folio 72 (D15060; Turner Bequest CLXXIX 71).
