This page contains two alternate sketches of the same vista, a view of Vesuvius framed by Castel dell’Ovo (Castle of the Egg) on the right and the buildings at the foot of the Pizzofalcone Hill on the right. The former fortress is built on a small islet connected to the mainland by a narrow jetty and Turner’s viewpoint appears to be to the immediate west of the headland, probably from a boat on the water. A small part of the upper study spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 14 (D15934) and a more detailed record of the same subject can be found on folio 17 (D15940).
