The locations represented within these five landscape sketches remain unidentified, although they were probably drawn from the road travelling through the hilly countryside to the south-east of Rome. The bottom two vistas appear to depict a medieval tower. The main focus of interest, however, is the effects of weather and light within the scenery. The upper three studies in particular represent the onset of a rain shower and the artist has annotated the sequence with written notes regarding colour and atmospheric conditions.
