Turner made a thorough exploration of the picturesque scenery of Posillipo to the west of Naples. This view depicts part of the coast near Marechiaro characterised by rugged cliffs and shoreline grottos. For a similar sketch see folio 74 verso (D16052; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 72a).
