This page contains drawings of classical sculptural fragments decorated with a figurative relief. Turner has transcribed the Latin inscriptions from the objects. The upper text reads ‘TI CAESI DIVI | AGUSTIE DIVI | IVLINAVGVSTO | PONTII MIAXMO.COSIIII | MI PVIITRIBTETAT XXXII | AVGVSTALES | RESPVBLICA | SESTITVIE’, whilst the middle sketch is accompanied by ‘PHILODELPHEA’ and ‘NOS LIBRA A AD GLAVVIDEIA H | MVRIN DELPHI[...]’. The source is unidentified but the artist made numerous similar studies of ancient statues and monuments in Italy, particularly in the Vatican Fragments sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest CLXXX).
