This page contains part of a panoramic view of the Bay of Gaeta on the Tyrrhenian coast, seen from Formia (formerly known as Mola di Gaeta). The bay sweeps round in a great curve towards the headland of Gaeta and the round, so-called mausoleum of Munatius Plancus, also known as the Torre d’Orlando. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 27 (D15607; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 26), and a further related view can be found in the Naples, Paestum, Rome sketchbook (Tate D15947; Turner Bequest CLXXXVI 19c).
As a young man, Turner had made a watercolour copy of a view of Gaeta by another artist, see Dr Monro’s Album of Italian Views (Tate D36469; Turner Bequest CCCLXXIII 56).
