Turner made numerous sketches of the bustle of shipping and human activity which could be observed along the Neapolitan seafront. This sketch depicts part of a view looking east from the Largo della Vittoria on the long straight stretch of the Chiaia waterfront (near present-day Piazza della Vittoria). There are a large number of figures at the water’s edge, and the Sorrentine peninsula can be seen along the distant horizon. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, with the Castel dell’Ovo and the Pizzofalcone Hill, see folio 41 verso (D15635; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 40a).
