This distinctive section of coastline can be found at Torregaveta, west of Baiae and the Cape of Misenum (Capo Miseno), south of Cumae. As a near-contemporaneous drawing by the Neapolitan artist Giacinto Gigante (1806–76) shows, the spur of headland was once topped by a medieval watch-tower, one of a large number of such defenses found along the Neapolitan and Amalfi coast.1 For further sketches see folios 83–84, 85 verso, 91 verso (D15719–D15721, D15724, and D15736; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 81–82, 83a, and 89a).
