The two sketches on this page represent views looking in different directions from the slopes of Monte Nuovo in the Campi Flegrei region to the west of Naples. The upper study depicts the eastern vista towards Pozzuoli and the island of Nisida, with the Sorrentine peninsula in the far distance beyond. The lower study, meanwhile depicts the prospect looking south across the Bay of Baiae, with the castle on the promontory in the centre and the Cape of Misenum (Capo Miseno) to the left. Part of the composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 88 verso (D15730; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 86a). Similar views can be seen on folio 89 verso (D15732; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 87a).
