The subject of this sketch is not conclusively identified although it appears to depict a view of the walls of the archeological site of Pompeii with a distant view of mountains. By the time of Turner’s visit in 1819 the whole circuit of the walls had been ascertained. An inscription on the pillar to the left reads ‘Strada | di Pompei’ (Street of Pompeii).
