This sketch is too rough to be conclusively identified but it appears to depict the city walls of Pompeii seen from the south with Vesuvius in the background. Turner’s inscription may indicate that his viewpoint is the nineteenth-century road between Naples and Salerno which ran along the southern perimeter of the site.
