Turner appears to have travelled by boat between Salerno, Amalfi and Sorrento, sketching the towns dotted along the rugged Amalfi coast from the sea. This sketch depicts a view of part of the coastline west of Salerno. On the right is the town of Vietri sul Mare, identifiable from the dome and campanile of the seventeenth-century Church of San Giovanni Battista, whilst on the heights above the shore to the left is Raito. The composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread with a view of Salerno, see folio 50 (D15829). Similar studies can be seen on folios 36, 48 verso–49 and 58 verso (D15805, D15827–D15827 and D15906).
