This sequence of sketches represents views from the sea of the Sorrentine coast. The uppermost scene depicts a prospect looking north towards Castellammare di Stabia with Vesuvius beyond. In the centre is part of the rocky shoreline with one of the many historic watch-towers situated at intervals all along the waterfront, whilst the bottom drawing shows the sun setting over distant Sorrento. Further views of the peninsula can be seen on folios 60–66 (D15847–D15859; Turner Bequest CLXXXV 59–65)
