Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg identified the subject of this sketch as the valley of the Arno, with the river winding through the centre of the composition towards open plain and distant mountains.1 Turner’s exact location is currently unidentified although it may be Fiesole, a town to the north-east of Florence.
