As Turner’s written inscription indicates, the small landscape sketch at the top of this page represents a distant view of ‘Florence f[rom] F[iesole]’. The vista looks south-west from the wooded slopes of the town and follows the winding course of the River Mugnone towards the city itself, dominated by the dome of the Duomo (Cathedral). The artist has also noted the colours of the mountains along the far horizon. The second study depicts an alternate prospect looking south-east towards the valley of the Arno. For a fuller description and further studies from Fiesole see folio 30 verso (D16542).
